Bethesda, Maryland (August 9, 2017) – Make-A-Wish® has received a $1.25 million charitable donation from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company to grant more life-changing wishes for children with cancer. The seven-figure contribution will benefit Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic and the other 61 Make-A-Wish chapters nationwide. Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic has allocated a portion of the funds to granting Ricky’s most heartfelt wish. Ricky will experience the life-changing power of a wish when he travels to the Atlantis resort this summer.
Local wish kid Ricky is 18-years-old and currently diagnosed with leukemia. When thinking about his most heartfelt wish, Ricky wanted to travel to a place that was warm and sunny and full of fun adventures for him and his family. After thinking through his options, Ricky decided a trip to Atlantis would be the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation that he and his family so desperately needed after a long and serious fight with cancer. Ricky is looking forward to enjoying fun in the sun with his mom and sister, and most of all, he’s excited to have time away from hospitals, doctor’s offices and chemotherapy treatments.
“We rely on the generosity of donors and corporate sponsors to be able to continue granting more and better wishes for kids like Ricky," said Patricia Gill, Director of Corporate Development and Special Events of Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. "Thanks to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Ricky’s wish will be granted, bringing us one step closer to our vision to someday grant the wish of every eligible child.”
“We are inspired by the work Make-A-Wish does to enlighten the lives of children diagnosed with critical illnesses, like cancer, and their families,” said Teresa Bitetti, senior vice president, Head, US Oncology, Bristol-Myers Squibb. “We understand the important role emotional health plays in one’s cancer fight, and so we are proud to support programs that can provide hope, inspiration and happiness.”
The million dollar donation coincides with ground-breaking, third-party research that shows the wish experience can not only influence a child’s emotional health, but can also play a role in their physical health, working in concert with traditional medicine to help kids get better. About Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic
Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic serves children who reside in central and southern Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and northern Virginia. Founded in 1983, the Mid-Atlantic chapter has granted more than 8,800 wishes in the Mid-Atlantic region since its inception. Wish kids face any number of life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, pediatric AIDS, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Duchene’s muscular dystrophy, kidney and heart disease. This year alone, 840 local children are expected to be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. However, for every wish granted, at least two more local children are waiting. The community has the opportunity to make an impact today by helping Make-A-Wish to reach hundreds of kids whose wishes would go otherwise go unanswered this year.
