Like many girls her age, nine-year-old Elizabeth from Fairfax, VA, loves eating pizza, playing board games, jumping rope, playing with animals, watching movies with her family and listening to Taylor Swift. When diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of 2016, however, her childhood transitioned from spending afternoons playing outside to hours of waiting in hospital beds to receive treatment. When Elizabeth learned she would be receiving a wish from Make-A-Wish®
Mid-Atlantic, she was elated. Elizabeth immediately wished to go to the San Diego Zoo and be a zookeeper for a day!
Elizabeth arrived in style at the airport after being picked up by a limo. From there, she traveled to California with her mother, father and older sister for the trip of a lifetime. At the zoo, Elizabeth had the opportunity to interact with animals such as giraffes, koalas and sloths. She even got the chance to pet and feed the animals while learning more about each of them!
Elizabeth’s wish gave her and her family something positive to hold on to while going through this difficult time in their lives. Having the opportunity to be a zookeeper for a day gave both Elizabeth and her family hope, strength and joy when they needed it most.
