Theresa's wish to be a ballerina

Theresa as a ballerina

“ 99% of wish parents reported that the wish experience gave their children increased feelings of happiness. ”

Theresa waited until she grew strong enough to experience her greatest wish: spend a day with the Washington Ballet and become a ballerina.

Five-year-old Theresa from Kensington, Maryland has a dream to be a ballerina. Unfortunately she could only dream about dancing while lying in a hospital bed during her cancer treatments. When she found out that Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic was going to grant her greatest wish, she became excited. Theresa waited until she grew strong enough to experience her greatest wish: spend a day with the Washington Ballet and become a ballerina.

Theresa was treated like a star from the start. She and her family were picked up by a limo to meet the legendary dancer, choreographer and artistic director of the Wash-ington Ballet, Septime Webre. Septime and other dancers were rehearsing for the Nutcracker and graced Theresa with a personal performance of her favorite scene. At the end of the rehearsal, Septime brought Theresa up and taught her some ballet moves.

Theresa stopped over to another studio where the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was being rehearsed. She met Talia Startsman who played Clara and also met dancers who were as young as she was! The highlight for Theresa was a private dance lesson and autographed toe shoes. At the end of her trip, Theresa had sugar plum fairies dancing in her head and new ballet moves to practice. This was surely an experience Theresa will never forget.

  • On April 7, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic celebrated its 35th anniversary with Evening of Wishes, presented by GPR, Inc. Over 400 individuals, including 35 wish families, enjoyed a delicious meal, expansive silent auction, exciting live auction and magical wish moments. These moments included a wish reveal for Nijah, who wished to be a ballerina, as well as the premiere of Cooper's Service Dog Wish video. The event raised over $720,000 to help support local wishes for kids like Nijah and Cooper. A special thank you to top sponsors GPR, Inc., BB&T, Jodie Hughes, GPR Green LLC, Kawneer and Foulger Pratt, as well as all of our other generous sponsors. Additional thanks to our event chairs, Vito and Kristi Germinario and our emcee Vote Ashwani Jain. Of course, this event would not have been possible without our amazing event volunteers, who we are celebrating this week during #VolunteerAppreciationWeek.
