Like many boys his age, 14-year-old Daequan from Annapolis, MD, enjoys playing card games, board games and watching movies in his free time. However, unlike many of his peers, Daequan also manages a digestive system disorder. Daequan has always dreamed of travelling, but his medical condition often made it difficult to schedule between doctor appointments and treatment plans. When Daequan found out he would be receiving a wish from Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic, he wished to go to the beach in an RV.
Daequan had always wanted to camp, and he couldn’t wait to spend time at the beach for his wish trip! While at the beach, Daequan enjoyed cooking on a grill, walking on the sand and playing in the water. Daequan hadn’t been able to enjoy a vacation with his family for some time due to his medical condition, and he was overjoyed to not only be creating memories with his loved ones but to also be camping and experiencing something new.
Wishes like Daequan’s give children battling life-threatening medical conditions something to look forward to other than managing their disease. When the RV pulled up, Daequan asked his mom, “Is this really happening? It isn’t a dream – it’s real.” Daeuqan’s mom added it was great to “see the shadow of fear and pain recede because he was having fun.”
