Eight-year-old Elijah from Rockville, MD, enjoys reading Star Wars comic books, playing MineCraft and spending time with his cats in his free time. When Elijah was diagnosed with a brain tumor, however, his world changed completely. Rather than going to school and spending time with his family, Elijah dealt with aggressive radiation treatment and extended hospital stays. While battling brain cancer, Elijah’s love for animals brought him joy during a difficult time. When he found out Make-A-Wish®
Mid-Atlantic would be granting his one true wish, Elijah wished to go on an African safari.
Elijah couldn’t wait to go to Africa and see all of his favorite animals up close. Upon arriving in Africa, Elijah’s wish was everything he had hoped for and more. He and his family not only enjoyed an authentic African safari, but Elijah also enjoyed feeding elephants, visiting an ostrich farm and spending time at both primate and wildlife sanctuaries.
Elijah’s wish not only gave him a respite from a tough battle with brain cancer, but it also provided cherished memories for his family as a whole. Elijah’s mom shared, “The trip was perfect for Elijah – it was like you guys knew him. At the time of his wish, he was unable to speak, and despite that, the wish completely reflected the things he’s most interested in. He left Africa wanting to know when he can come back. It was a very special experience for him to have with his sister – they are still bonding over things they did while they were there. The impact of the experience will be with our family for a long time."
