As a result of her treatments for acute lymphoid leukemia, Laura was often fatigued and spent many hours sleeping.
After a few nights of 13 hours of sleep, her friends began comparing her to sleepy koala bears and decided to give her the nickname Koala. The name and her interest in the cute and fuzzy animal stuck. When the Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic volunteers asked Laura what her one true wish was, it was no surprise that she asked for an exotic vacation to Australia. She was excited to see the beautiful beaches and wildlife and to experience its unique culture.
Laura and her family set off from their home in Fairfax, VA to Australia, but not before Laura received her fun travel package filled with cards, stickers, and a variety of beach knick knacks. Once there, the family got to experience the many wonders of Australia. Laura said her favorite part was going to the zoo and seeing the mother and baby koala bears. They also got to see the Sydney Opera House. Laura and her family experienced a lot of rain on their trip but Laura said that the rain didn't stop them from having an awesome time.
Laura's mom told us that the highlight of the trip for her was the aquarium. During the seal show, they were amazed by all the animals' training and coordination. It's nice to know that Laura got to see a lot of Australia's wildlife which she had been looking forward to. Overall, the family said they had a great experience. Most importantly though, Laura and her family were thankful for their opportunity to finally relax and forget about all of her leukemia treatments.
