Seven-year-old Alex from Washington, DC, is a Pokémon aficionado. After a leukemia diagnosis, Alex’s favorite game, Pokémon Go, helped to distract him from countless medical procedures and chemotherapy treatments. Upon finding out he would be receiving a wish from Make-A-Wish®
Mid-Atlantic, Alex knew exactly what to wish for – to have a real-life Pokémon Go adventure.
Alex, who is currently in active treatment for leukemia, experienced an exciting wish day as he embarked on a series of Pokémon missions throughout Washington, DC. Throughout the day, Alex received clues which led him on an adventure to catch different Pokémon on and near the National Mall, including Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Snorlax and more! During his wish day, Alex visited the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History, the Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters, the Hard Rock Café, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and the Grand Hyatt Washington DC. With the help of businesses, community partners and crowds of cheering fans, Alex’s wish was brought to life.
Alex was thrilled with his Pokémon Go adventure. At the end of the day, he even exclaimed, “This was the best day ever!” Granting wishes like Alex’s creates happy memories during a difficult time and enriches the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
