Ember’s face lit up. He was holding an iPad and watching a special message from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Peter Newsham. The Chief announced that there was trouble afoot, and MPD needed Ember’s help right away to defend DC and keep the city safe. Ember’s wish to be a K9 police officer was coming true.

Eight-year-old Ember was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was just a baby. In his short lifetime, he has faced more struggles than many adults, including losing one of his lungs at the age of two and a half and enduring many hospitals stays. Despite all of this, he has kept his focus on the things that he could do for others. Ember set his sights on becoming a K9 police officer so that he could help people and keep the streets safe.

After learning that the Police Chief needed his help, Ember did not waste any time reporting for duty. He rushed to FOX 5 DC’s studios where he picked up his uniform and received his first assignment. Over the course of the day, he bravely completed missions at MPD’s K9 Training Center, MPD Air Support, MPD Harbor Patrol, Grand Hyatt DC, the Library of Congress, the National Tree and MPD Headquarters. Ember was ready to help no matter what – rescuing a person from the harbor, stopping a criminal from stealing the Lincoln Bible and searching for a switch to illuminate the National Christmas Tree. Throughout the day, Ember proudly represented MPD and put on a courageous face as their newest recruit.

Ember’s wish day was filled with joy. He exclaimed, “Today was a dream come true.” Ember felt inspired by the support of police officers across the DC metropolitan area; at the finale of his wish, Ember was cheered on by officers from 14 different units (US Department of State, Amtrak Police Department, FBI Police K-9 Team, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, Fairfax County Police Department, US Customs and Border Protection: Border Patrol, US Customs and Border Protection: Office of Field Operations, US Customs and Border Protection: Air and Marine Operations, DC Department of Corrections, Prince George's Sheriff Office, United States Park Police, Montgomery County Department of Police, United States Secret Service and Metro Transit Police Department.)

After his wish, Ember’s mom shared that he had set the goal to move to DC and become an official K9 officer with MPD one day. Based on his amazing performance on his wish day, there is no doubt that Ember will reach his goal.
