When seventeen-year-old Emily of Towson, Maryland imagines the perfect getaway: the setting is always tropical -- blue skies, warm sun and a beautiful sandy beach.
So when Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic granted Emily a wish, it was no surprise that Emily chose to go to the island of St. Thomas. Emily was battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and, according to her dad, just thinking about this wish gave Emily a much needed "light at the end of the tunnel."
When it was time to travel, Emily had successfully completed her treatments and there was a lot to be thankful for. Emily, along with her mom, dad and siblings, flew to St. Thomas and settled into their hotel at Frenchman's Reef. It was "amazing," Emily said. They went to the beach every day, played beach volleyball and tried all of the resort’s multiple swimming pools. One of the highlights was their day trip to St. John, a nearby island with a world-famous beach. Emily was thrilled!
Emily loved the week of exploring St. Thomas, shopping, and tasting some of the local fare (plus plenty of "beach time"). Emily's dad remarked how special it was to "spend time with my family... with all of the logistics planned for us... and we had nothing to worry about." Everyone in the family had a terrific getaway, especially Emily. Although she may have left St. Thomas behind, the blue skies and sunshine of paradise will always remain in her heart.
