Ronnie's wish to go to Atlantis

Ronnie's wish

“ It was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. ”

For any child, being diagnosed with a critical illness is a terrifying experience. Daily routines are forced to change, not to mention treatments can make anyone feel especially isolated in a time of need. A critical illness affects not only the child diagnosed but the entire family.

For 9-year-old Ronnie from Sparrows Point, MD, his leukemia diagnosis meant strengthening an already special bond with his older sisters, Emily and Elizabeth. Emily dedicated herself to helping Ronnie by staying at the hospital with him during treatments, helping administer medicine and more. Elizabeth became one of Ronnie’s best friends, spending time with him when he was in the hospital and always lending her support. Thanks to the commitment from Ronnie’s parents, Emily and Elizabeth, Ronnie was able to make the best of a tough situation.

Ronnie was so excited when he found out Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic would be granting his one true wish. He knew it had to be something that would bring as much happiness to his sisters and parents as it would to him. Ronnie dreamed of flying somewhere tropical in a plane for the first time and visiting a beautiful beach. After some exciting research, Ronnie decided his wish would be to go to Atlantis in the Bahamas, where he could hang out on the beach with the sand between his toes and watch animals swim in the ocean. He was especially excited to see the incredible water slides that would shoot him down into the clear blue water.

At the Atlantis Resort, Ronnie was treated like a king. He hung out on the beach and at the waterpark each day, swimming around the pools and making new friends. Ronnie even had a chance to race his sisters down the massive water slides and beat both of them! Ronnie loved that his wish trip gave him a chance to escape the cold winter at home and spend some time in the sunny, warm Bahamas. His trip was everything he imagined and gave him special time to spend with his family and truly relax. He will always have the memories of Atlantis to bring him happiness.
